By the age of 18 a scholar would have spent 15.4% of their life in school. It is crucial to ensure a safe learning and working environment in school for the students and the staff.
There have been hundreds of cases of insecurity in schools which could have been attributed by external and internal attacks, fire, strikes and also natural calamities; In 1998, a girl’s dormitory housing around 130 students at Bombolulu Girls Secondary School, currently referred to as Mazeras Memorial Secondary School, fire razed down the structure during the night hours. In the wake of the disaster 26 girls died and more than 30 were admitted. In 1999 at Nyeri High School, 4 prefects were locked up in a dormitory and set ablaze by fellow students.
Given a case scenario whereby a parent gets a call from school and is informed that their loved one is involved in an accident or even worse, dead, the news can be traumatizing and unbearable.
A safe learning environment is essential for students of all ages. Without it, they are unable to focus on learning the skills needed for a successful education and future. With this in mind, Optisafe in partnership with The Institute of Professional Security Studies (IPSS), held the Safe Schools Event on 25TH February 2020 at IPSS.
The event saw key players in the safety and security sector in the country; Tim Chege, the C.E.O and Chairman, Optimum Group, Lt, Col. (Rtd) Julius Ayub Githiri, Chairman IPSS, Dr. Andrew Mruka, Deputy Director, DOSH and Mr. Joseph Mungai Githoro, Registered Fire Safety Auditor. They led the discussions on measures to be taken in keeping schools safe.
