Fire extinguishers are very essential in the event of a fire. Before you attach the fire, there are some crucial aspects you should have in mind:

  1. Is it a small fire that can be tackled using an extinguisher?
  2. Do you know the Class of Fire and is the extinguisher you’re going to use compatible to fight that kind of fire?

Once you have checked those boxes, don’t hesitate, use the PASS technique to tackle the fire before it’s too late.

What does the acronym PASS stands for?

Pull the pin.

Aim low at the base of the fire, pointing the hose, nozzle or horn.

Squeeze the handle or trigger to release the extinguishing substance.

Sweep from side to side.

Remember, if you have any doubt about whether the fire can be tackled, abandon and evacuate to a safe place.

Key things to have in mind in the event of a fire:

  • Sound the alarm and call the emergency number.
  • Identify a safe evacuation route before tackling the fire.
  • Keep checking to make sure the fire nor smoke comes between you and your evacuation path.
  • Evaluate the fire and select the correct fire extinguisher for the blaze, if you are unsure of the cause, evacuate immediately.
  • Use the PASS technique to tackle the fire.
  • If the fire appears to be extinguished, back away and wait, watch for reignition.
  • In an event where you have discharge the extinguisher and the fire has not been put out, immediately evacuate.

Remember fire extinguishers are only suitable for dealing with small fires. One of the most important lessons to learn is fires can be life threatening and your knowledge of how to handle a fire incidences is very crucial .
