Fire poses a tremendous safety risk for any business or home. Fires can be life threatening and cause damage to property and/or assets. One of the biggest safety issues we see, in fact, yet one that is sometimes overlooked or underestimated is awareness of fire safety.

An important aspect of any prevention process requires the full awareness of the risks and impacts. Fire safety awareness is the important starting point in an integrated fire safety plan for every business or home.

We have highlighted various aspect to consider in an event of a fire.

Do

  • Know your building’s evacuation plan.
  • Evacuate calmly and quickly whenever a fire alarm or carbon monoxide alarm sounds.
  • Keep important items for instance; medications and medical equipment handy for quick access in the event of a building evacuation.
  • Know two ways out of any building.
  • Before opening a door, feel it with the back of your hand. If the door is hot, do not open it.
  • Stay low to the ground as you make your way to the exit. If there is presence of smoke.
  • Activate the nearest fire alarm in-order to alert those around you, and from a safe location call the emergency numbers by dialing 999 / 112 / 911.
  • Ensure that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms have batteries.
  • Test smoke alarms regularly.
  • Make sure that hallways and stairway doors close tightly.
  • Know the locations of fire extinguishers, fire alarm pull stations, and exits.
  • Learn how to use a fire extinguisher.

Do NOT

  • Leave candles, incense, barbecue grills or other open flames unattended.
  • Leave cooking appliances unattended.
  • Use barbecue grills in or on any building or fire escape.
  • Smoke in bed.
  • Tamper with smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, fire alarms and fire extinguishers.
  • Ignore any building alarm.
  • Use elevators during an evacuation.
